- Jack Dorsey claimed that India raided the homes of Twitter workers after the company refused ban certain accounts.
- Dorsey claimed that India, the largest democracy in the world, has also threatened to shut down Twitter.
- Since then, India's minister of information technology has called Dorsey’s claim an "outright Lie."
Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter, said that the Indian government had raided employees' homes when they refused to comply with the censorship requests.
Dorsey spoke on the podcast, "Breaking Points", hosted by Krystal Enjeti and Saagar Ball on Tuesday. He recalled dealings he had with powerful people who tried to influence Twitter operations when he was still running the company.
Dorsey stated that India had made many requests to us regarding the farmers' protest and journalists who were critical of government. "And it manifested itself in ways like: 'We'll shut her down in India', which is a large market for us."
Dorsey went on to say, "We'll raid the homes your employees," which is exactly what they did. "We will close your offices if we don't get our way." This is India, which is a democracy."
Dorsey made his remarks two years after Twitter was slammed by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for its failure to suppress dissent or criticism.
A major incident was the January 2021 farmers' protests, in which tens and thousands of farmers gathered to object to agricultural legislation. Twitter refused to ban aggressively critical accounts of the Indian government.
Twitter's statement said that "in keeping with our principles defending protected speech, freedom of expression and news media entities", we had not taken action against accounts consisting of journalists, activists and politicians.
The tensions grew when, in May 2021 the government passed a law that made employees and tech companies liable to prosecution and jail sentences for refusing takedown orders.
In the same month, Indian police raided Twitter offices in Delhi and Gurgaon as part of a probe into Twitter's labeling of tweets from an Indian minister as "manipulated media".
Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India's Minister of Information Technology, said on Tuesday that Dorsey was lying when he claimed that the homes of Twitter employees were raided.
Chadrasekhar accused Twitter of "partisan behaviour" and said that the platform violated Indian laws in the attempt by the local government to suppress misinformation.
Chandrasekhar didn't immediately reply to an Insider request for a comment. Dorsey’s company Block did not respond immediately to an outside of normal business hours request from Insider.
