Former Rep. Liz Cheney accuses House Speaker Mike Johnson of supporting Trump's election claims
In a recent interview on "CBS Sunday Morning," former Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming accused now-House Speaker Mike Johnson of being a "collaborator" in former President Donald Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. Cheney, who left office earlier this year, criticized Johnson's support of Trump's election claims and his push to oppose the certification of President Joe Biden's wins in Arizona and Pennsylvania.
Trump needed collaborators, and Mike Johnson was one, says Cheney
Cheney emphasized that Trump couldn't carry out his efforts alone and required collaborators. According to Cheney, Mike Johnson's story is that of a collaborator. She stated, "If you look at what Donald Trump is trying to do, he can't do it by himself. He has to have collaborators. And the story of Mike Johnson is a story of a collaborator."
Johnson's role in the GOP congressional effort to overturn election results
Mike Johnson, who became the House Speaker in October 2023 after a revolt led by far-right Republicans, played a significant role in the GOP congressional effort to challenge the 2020 election results. He supported a Texas lawsuit aiming to overturn the results in key swing states. However, the US Supreme Court rejected the lawsuit.
Cheney reveals Johnson's dangerous actions
In the CBS interview, Cheney expanded on her relationship with Johnson and expressed her concerns about his actions. She stated that Johnson was operating in a dangerous manner by taking steps he knew to be wrong and pursuing actions with no basis in fact or law. Cheney criticized Johnson for ignoring court rulings and disregarding the opinions of state and federal courts in order to fulfill Trump's agenda.
Johnson's office denies Cheney's claims
Johnson's office issued a statement disputing Cheney's comments about the 2020 presidential election. The statement claimed that Cheney's new book does not accurately portray the events and that Johnson wishes Cheney the best in her future endeavors.
Liz Cheney, who lost the Wyoming Republican primary last year, has been a vocal critic of Trump since the January 6 Capitol riot. She was one of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in inciting the insurrection. Cheney's upcoming book, titled "Oath and Honor," is set to be released on December 5.
