Florida Man's Alleged Plot for a "Mass Casualty Event"
A Florida man was arrested this week after allegedly planning a "mass casualty event" at Tesla's Cybertruck promotional event. The suspect, Paul Ryan Overeem, reportedly traveled to Texas specifically for the event held at the Tesla Giga Texas factory in Austin. Traffic cameras captured his vehicle on a highway in southwest Austin on November 28.
Threatening Posts on Instagram
Overeem had been under investigation for making threatening posts on Instagram under the username "ufotnoitalumis" in a group chat. On November 9, he posted a message stating his intention to kill people at the event on November 30, urging someone to do something about it. Another message emphasized the seriousness of his threats.
Disdain for Modern Technology
It appears that Overeem harbored a strong dislike for modern technology, expressing his thoughts about feeling trapped by electronics. According to the arrest warrant, he stated, "my thoughts haven't been free for over a year. All the electronics around me."
Arrest and Confession
Overeem was apprehended in a McDonald's parking lot by the Travis County Sheriff's Office and remains in custody on a $300,000 bond. He was booked on suspicion of making a terroristic threat. Following his arrest, Overeem reportedly informed police officers about the weapons in his car and revealed his plan to commit suicide. He also confessed to his intention of targeting Elon Musk and the Tesla plant. Additionally, he claimed that he believed Elon Musk and Shivon Zilis, a Neuralink director and the mother of Musk's twins, were monitoring him.
Elon Musk has not made any comments regarding the arrest. Business Insider reached out to the Travis County Police Department and Tesla for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
