Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, acknowledged Elon Musk’s recent criticisms on Twitter about his company.
Altman stated that Lex Fridman was attacking him on Twitter at the moment on several vectors.
Musk, who was an OpenAI cofounder, has cut ties with the company. Musk accused OpenAI of being a "maximum-profit company" due to its partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI has been funded by more than $10 billion by the tech giant.
Musk also took aim at ChatGP, the company's viral chatbot – raising questions about its inflexible responses. Musk also called the technology "scary" on Twitter, and stated that it was "not far from dangerously powerful AI."
Altman stated that he understood Musk's concerns about artificial general intelligence (AGI), which is an AI system that can think and learn intellectual tasks just like humans. These systems can lead to "catastrophic consequences" according to experts.
Altman described Musk as one his heroes, saying that he was "clearly stressed" about AGI safety. He wished Musk would do more for OpenAI to address these concerns. OpenAI encourages conversations about the governance of these systems and is seeking feedback from the public in order to shape its tech.
Insider reached out to Musk and Altman representatives for comment but they did not respond immediately.
OpenAI's ChatGPT was also criticized by users who claimed that the bot generates answers with biased political opinions. Musk routinely points out these instances via Twitter.
Altman addressed this criticism on the podcast. He said: "It was too biased — it will always be. Altman stated that there will never be a single version of GPT on which the entire world can agree.
He said, "We will do our best to make the default version as neutral and neutral-sounding as possible. However, it is not possible to make it neutral for more than one person."
