Protesters Demand Justice for Laid-Off Mexican Workers Outside VU Manufacturing

October 27, 2023 By Peter Leave a Comment

Protesters Gather Outside VU Manufacturing Headquarters

On Tuesday, Sept. 26, protesters from various organizations gathered outside VU Manufacturing's headquarters in Troy, Michigan. The protesters, including members of the United Auto Workers (UAW), Labor Notes, and the Democratic Socialists of America, were there to support 400 Mexican workers who were recently laid off by the company.

Protest Organized by Mexico Solidarity Project

The protest was organized by the Mexico Solidarity Project, an independent organization that aims to build connections between workers and left organizations in the US and Mexico. They partnered with Labor Notes under their joint Mexico Solidarity Project Labor Support Committee.

US Department of Labor Closes Workers' Case

Less than two weeks after the protest, the US Department of Labor announced that they have closed the workers' case against VU Manufacturing. The agency did not impose any sanctions or disciplinary actions against the company, as permitted under the USMCA. The responsibility of the case now falls on the Mexican government.

Workers Still Await Severance Pay

The 71 remaining workers who were laid off by VU Manufacturing have not received their legally mandated severance pay. They have also been blacklisted from other maquilas in Piedras Negras, where the majority of workers are employed, due to their association with the plant.

Activists Continue to Fight for Demands

Despite the closure of the case, activists are still working to fulfill the list of demands presented to VU Manufacturing. They are determined to seek justice for the laid-off Mexican workers.
