- Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, said that the US government was not prepared to deal with artificial intelligence.
- Ohanian stated that the government must "get up to speed" with the topic, as it is an important issue.
- Recently, Vice President Kamala Harris invited tech leaders to White House to discuss AI security.
Reddit co-founder, Reddit, is the latest person to speak out on the AI debate. He says the US government must do more to ensure the safety of the technology.
Alexis Ohanian is a cofounder at Reddit along with Steve Huffman, Aaron Swartz and spoke to CNN's Chris Wallace about AI. Wallace showed a montage clips of senators questioning tech leaders on the technology they create, with little knowledge or understanding about its workings.
In a clip, a senator is seen asking Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg about the sustainability of its business model if users do not pay for services. After a pause, Zuckerberg responded: "Senator, we run ads."
In the interview, Wallace asked Ohanian if Washington was "equipped to set guardrails for AI."
Ohanian stated, "No. I believe there is a larger discussion here about our responsibility as voters in electing people who understand these important technologies."
He said: "I am grateful to the White House that they brought together all these AI leaders and got them on board." I believe technologists should be present at this table and I am sure there are many bright and hardworking people in Washington who need to pay attention to the discussion, dig in and get up to speed on this issue because it is an important one and will be good for America if we can solve it.
The Vice President Kamala Harris invited CEOs of Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, to the White House, to discuss AI safety. They have a legal responsibility to ensure that their products are safe for use.
Many tech leaders, such as Elon Musk, are raising concerns about possible misuses of AI. They have called for a stop to its development so that regulators can catch up.
Ohanian shared his views on AI with Business Insider in 2018, saying that he didn't think "non-routine jobs" like barbers and nurses would be replaced by robots.
Ohanian stated, "My sister is a nurse and I have always tested whether a robot could do her job. The answer is never yes." "I don't believe that a robot could do the work of a nurse, or put up with all the bull— that nurses have to deal with."
Reddit announced recently that it will start charging companies for using its data to train AI. Reddit data has been used by major tech companies like Microsoft, OpenAI and Google to train AI models.
Reddit didn't immediately respond to Insiders request for a comment on Ohanian remarks.
