- Twitter announced Tuesday a new policy regarding violent speech for its users.
- New rules forbid violence threats against people, infrastructure, and buildings.
- For wishing harm, sickness, or tragedy on another person, users may be banned or suspended.
Twitter's new policy on violent speech makes it illegal to threaten to kill or rape anyone.
"You must not threaten to inflict any physical harm upon others. This includes, but is not limited to, threatening to kill or torture someone, sexually assault them, or other hurtful actions. This includes threatening civilian homes or shelters or infrastructure that is essential for daily civic or business activities," Twitter's new policy reads Tuesday.
When the policy is broken, users will be removed from social media platforms "immediately" and "permanently". Accounts may be temporarily locked in certain "less severe" cases.

In addition to the new policy, the updated policy now includes: "You cannot wish, hope or desire harm." This includes, but is not limited to, the wish for others to suffer from illness, death, tragic events, or other adverse consequences.
According to the Wayback Machine of Twitter's old violent speech policy, statements that expressed the wish or hope of someone experiencing physical harm were not subject to the violence speech policy. However, they could be dealt with under the abusive behavior and hate conduct policies.
After Elon Musk's October $44 billion purchase of the social media platform, he changed the app's privacy policy, banned a student who tracked his private plane, and changed the site’s policy regarding satire accounts after a number of comedians with verified checksmarks claimed to be billionaires.
It is not clear what caused the change in violent speech policy.
