Tesla cars are unlike other electric cars in 21 ways

Tesla vehicles

[TAG0][TAG15] are designed with an array of easter eggs and interesting add-ons.

  • Tesla's Autopilot feature is one that attracts a lot attention.
  • The car comes with many other features, such as the "frunk" that competitors have copied.
  • The "Dog Mode" and the "Ludicrous plus Mode" are also unique Tesla features.

Tesla's app and keycard are some of the more tech-savvy features you would expect. Some of the features reflect Elon Musk’s unique sense humor, which has added to Tesla’s cult-like following.

These 21 Tesla features, from sentry mode to 'caraoke', put the car in a class of its own.

1. Autopilot[TAG1][TAG16]

All Tesla models come with an Autopilot system for driver assistance.

This feature allows a vehicle to automatically steer, brake, and accelerate within its lane. This function is not intended to replace the driver's role, but rather make driving safer and easier.

According to the website of Tesla, the new models are equipped with eight cameras and twelve sensors that give a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. Tesla CEO Elon Musk compared Autopilot cameras with the human eye in the past.

A Full-Self Driving Add-On for $15,000, or $199 per monthly, is also available. This add-on can recognize stop signs and lights as well as change lanes. The feature is in beta testing.

2. Caraoke[TAG2][TAG17]

Tesla has a "caraoke" function that allows owners to select from a wide selection of songs and music.

This feature was especially popular in China. The $188 Tesla in-car karaoke mics were sold out in China within an hour after the launch. TeslaMics are currently only available in China.

There are also songs in other languages included in the "caraoke music" selection. Don't think you can sing while driving. The car must be parked for the feature to function.

3. Bioweapon defense mode[TAG3][TAG18]

Tesla's Model X, Model Y and more recent versions Model S and Model 3 are all equipped with a HEPA filtration systems that prevent toxic chemicals from entering the car cabin.

Tesla has stated that the Tesla filtration system is capable of removing anything from bacteria and pollution to pollen.

Tesla released a video in January to demonstrate how its filter can protect drivers from biodefense agents.

4. Touchscreen[TAG4][TAG19]

Tesla's models all feature a touchscreen with a variety of features, including video games, streaming and traffic updates.

These screens also have standard features such as climate control and navigation, but they look completely different.

5. Video gaming and streaming

Tesla updates its infotainment systems with apps such as YouTube, Netflix and Hulu.

There are also several other options, including Theater, Arcade Toybox and Browser. The Arcade setting allows drivers to use steering wheel buttons, or a USB control device, to play complete games.

Most of the entertainment options are only available while the car is parked. However, drivers say that it helps them pass the time when Teslas have to charge or are stuck in traffic jams. A Tesla driver watched Netflix during a 14-hour snowy traffic jam earlier this year.

6. Web browser[TAG5][TAG20]

Tesla's premium connection allows you to access a variety of websites, such as Hulu, Spotify and PLEX Media Player, while your vehicle is parked.

7. Easter eggs[TAG6][TAG21]

Teslas are programmed with a variety of virtual Easter eggs. These can be anything from Santa Claus in his sleigh to a road with rainbow colors, or even the port on your supercharger.

8. Air suspension[TAG7][TAG22]

Teslas come with an automatic air suspension system which changes according to the GPS coordinates.

The Tesla control panel allows users to manually adjust the suspension firmness. This feature is very useful if you are traveling across the country and encounter changes in the roads.

9. Sentry mode[TAG8][TAG23]

You can keep an eye on your vehicle from any location in the world using Sentry mode.

If someone were to hit your car with a cart, the Tesla App will begin recording the footage from the exterior cameras. It will also alert you via the app that your vehicle was struck. This feature will eliminate the worry of wondering where that mysterious ding came from.

10. Superchargers[TAG9][TAG24]

Tesla has more than 35, 000 supercharging stations around the globe. The company is continuing to add new ones.

Tesla claims that you can charge up to 200 miles in as little as 15 minutes.

Fast-charging stations are a great advantage for Tesla drivers due to the speed and the availability of Tesla chargers.

According to the Department of Energy, Tesla Superchargers account for 58% of the fast-charging sockets in the US.

11. The key[TAG10][TAG25]

There are many options for Tesla keys that aren't the traditional ones.

There are unique key fobs that look like Tesla cars if you don't wish to use the phone or card.

12. Auto-presenting doors

The Tesla Model X's doors will unlock and open fully as soon as the driver is in front of it, holding the key.

In the Tesla in-car display, you can turn off or on this option.

Musk called it "one of the most important" Model X features in July.

13. The app[TAG11][TAG26]

The app is one of the most exciting features about Tesla, allowing drivers to operate their cars from anywhere.

If sentry mode is activated, the app will send real-time updates. The app allows you to check on the status of the vehicle as it charges, control the heat and air conditioning, lock and unlock the car, and even monitor the battery.

14. Over-the-air updates

Tesla's website states that Tesla vehicles receive frequent over-the-air software updates. These updates are intended to "improve safety" and add new features.

You can still drive your car while the updates are downloaded, but not when they are installed. Tesla has since been copied by other automakers for their vehicle update system.

15. Ludicrous Plus mode[TAG12][TAG27]

The ludicrous + mode is perfect for those who want to race their Tesla.

This feature allows the vehicle's maximum speed to be achieved by heating the Tesla battery up to the optimum temperature.

16. Plaid mode [TAG13][TAG28]

Tesla Model S Plaid Mode is another option for speed racers.

CNN reports that Teslas in plaid mode have "batteries and three electric motors capable of producing up to 1,020 hp and can go from zero to sixty miles per hour in two seconds." These cars are in the same performance category as Bugattis and Lamborghinis.

17. Dog mode

Tesla has introduced a dog mode that keeps your pet in the vehicle while regulating the temperature to prevent overheating.

The touchscreen in the car will show a background that lets curious passersby know that it is comfortable for your dog to be in your car and that you'll be back.

Tesla added a new feature in December that allows users to watch their dog live in the car. The Tesla app receives a feed directly from the cabin cam.

18. Automatic cabin overheat Protection

Tesla has a climate control system that automatically adjusts to extreme weather conditions.

Cabin Overheat protection system activates when interior temperature of an empty car reaches 105 degrees.

Musk stated in July that Tesla will be allowing drivers to control the temperature at which their cooling system turns on.

He said that Tesla's automatic cabin heat protection could make a big difference in record heatwaves.

19. Fart mode

Tesla cars have a "fart" mode which makes your car sound like it is blowing wind.

The driver can choose the speaker that plays the sound to create the illusion that it is coming from an individual seat or a particular direction.

The NHTSA raised concerns about the boombox mode, which used to allow drivers to replace their horn sound with anything from a bleating ram to a round applause.

20. The frunk[TAG14][TAG29]

Tesla is not the only car with a truck at the rear.

It is a similar feature to a trunk but it's located in front, not the back. This was quickly copied by other manufacturers.

Tesla has been the first to adopt this feature, and other automakers are now following suit. Ford F-150 Lightning Electric Pickup Truck, for example, also features a frunk.

21. The bar that displays explicit lyrics on the infotainment system

You can easily censor songs with the Tesla Music app. This is great for parents who are driving their children.
