- Tesla faces a class-action lawsuit from anyone who has owned or leased Teslas since 2019.
- Tesla is accused of violating privacy laws by allowing employees to access and share private photos and videos of customers.
- Reuters reported that Tesla employees could view footage from the onboard cameras.
Tesla was subject to a class action lawsuit on Friday following reports that Tesla may have violated privacy laws. The company was accused of sharing photos and videos taken by its cars internally.
This suit was filed to respond to a Reuters report, which was part of which Insider confirmed. Insider reported that Tesla employees had photos and videos taken by Tesla's cameras for its driving assistance programs. These images were sometimes shared internally and joked about.
Henry Yeh, who owns a Tesla for more than a year, brought the lawsuit against Tesla on behalf of everyone who has owned or leased one since 2019.
Tesla is accused of violating California's privacy laws and misleading customers about the use of their data. According to Tesla's website, the cameras were "designed from scratch to protect your privacy."
Tesla could be ordered to pay damages to owners of vehicles if the judge considers it a class action. According to staffers who spoke to Reuters, the footage contained information about the location of the capture, which allowed Tesla employees to determine the address and possibly the identity of individual Tesla owners.
According to the suit, Tesla owners have two choices. They can leave the cameras on and compromise their privacy or hire a professional to disable them. This will likely result in Tesla owners losing access to Autopilot systems that may have been one of the main reasons they purchased a Tesla.
Jack Fitzgerald, one the lawyers representing Yeh, stated in a statement to Insider that no one granted Tesla's employees permission for them to circulate and make entertainment out of their private photos. This is a shocking breach in trust by Tesla.
The suit cites several stories in the Reuters report. These included Tesla employees who claimed they shared photos and videos with Tesla owners. Images of the owners, their families and, in one instance, a video showing a naked man approaching his car.
Insider's Grace Kay and Tim Levin were told by a former Tesla Autopilot engineer that employees could see the video from the many cameras in their car. They compared this to being able to access "god's eyes." Reuters reported that employees shared images and videos of road rage incidents, including one in which a child was thrown off a bicycle.
Insider reached out to Tesla for comment but they did not respond immediately.
