Tesla now adds General Motors as a new company that uses its Superchargers

  • Some GM vehicles will be able use Tesla's Supercharger Network.
  • Ford and Tesla announced a similar partnership in May.
  • The lack of charging infrastructure is currently one of the largest obstacles to EV adoption.

General Motors cars will be able charge in a vast area of Tesla's Supercharger network by 2024.

The company announced that GM vehicles would have access to 12,000 Superchargers in 2020, and will adopt the North American Charging Standard by 2025. Mary Barra, CEO of GM, said that the company has effectively doubled the number chargers GM vehicles have access to.

Elon Musk is working with legacy automakers to help them achieve "equal footing", which will be a major step in achieving mass EV adoption. It could be very beneficial to drive sales if all automakers adopted a single charging standard, with a universal plug.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said: "Consumers will not have to worry what plug, what socket or which charging station they use." This is a major advancement for electric cars in North America.

Tesla announced an agreement with Ford similar to this one in May. Tesla has opened up parts of its European network for other cars.

According to the Department of Energy's statistics, Tesla has over 20,700 Supercharger plugs across North America. This makes it the largest charging network. Tesla is known for being reliable, while other stations have trouble keeping chargers online and working. The vast network of Tesla charging stations also helps to sell its cars.

Following the announcement, GM shares jumped by nearly 4% at the end of trading on Thursday.
