- Kairan Quazi, only 14, is the youngest of all.
- Age was not a barrier for him to land a job at Elon Musk’s SpaceX as a software developer.
- LinkedIn says, however, that he is still too young to be a member of the professional network platform.
Kairan Quazi is just 14 years old. He's the youngest software engineer at Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
LinkedIn claims that despite his age not being a barrier in landing a SpaceX job, he is still too young to use the platform.
Quazi shared a screenshot on Tuesday of a LinkedIn message that stated his account was restricted because he didn't meet the platform age requirements. LinkedIn pointed Quazi towards the platform's User Agreement, which stipulates a 16-year-old minimum age requirement.
We're impressed by your energy, enthusiasm and focus. Quazi's message from LinkedIn stated: "We can't wait for you to do great things in the world." We have restricted your account because you do not currently meet the age criteria for joining.
Quazi was told that he could rejoin LinkedIn when he reached the age of 16 and would receive a full refund on his LinkedIn Premium subscription plan.
Insider confirmed Quazi's public account is no longer accessible.
In the caption of his Instagram post Quazi expressed frustration about the policy. He wrote "I am qualified enough to land the most sought-after engineering job in the world, but not qualified to have access a professional social networking platform?"
Quazi, in a message sent to Insider by Quazi, said that he believed LinkedIn's policies on age "lack imagination." He also believes that they are "rooted" in adultism — a term that describes a bias favoring adults over younger people.
Quazi wrote: "Someone like myself needs to have a lot more access to mentors, and to the discussions about the industry that happen on the platform." "LinkedIn’s decision puts me at a competitive disadvantage against anyone else in my position."
He said that he hopes that LinkedIn's leadership will "see the need to update its age policy so that it is at least in line with most labor laws."
Quazi posted on LinkedIn about his new job as a software developer with Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite and Internet service division, before his LinkedIn account was restricted.
Quazi wrote on LinkedIn: "I'll be joining the coolest team on Earth as a software engineering on the Starlink Engineering Team." One of the few companies who did not use age as a arbitrary and outdated proxy to maturity and ability.
LinkedIn has not responded to Insiders' request for comment before publication.
The Seattle Times reported that Quazi will graduate this month from Santa Clara University, where he studied engineering and computer science. The Times reported that he and his family plan to move to Redmond, Washington, to begin his new job with SpaceX.
