- I drove the high-performance electric SUV Kia: The 2023 EV6 GT.
- It is stylish, fast, and high-tech. However, it has a limited range and no trunk at the front.
- The EV6 GT Kia loaned me was approximately $63,000 including a destination charge.
The 2023 EV6GT is a super-sporty version from Kia's EV6 Series. However, it's not perfect.
Are the benefits of this little SUV worth the $63,000? You will be the one to decide.
Pro: Impeccable style
[TAG1][TAG9]
To be honest, the EV6 was ugly to me when I first saw it online. The EV6's stubby hood and swoopy rear ended, along with other odd features, became more appealing to me as I spent more time with it. As the nerdy girl from high school takes off her glasses to become prom queen, the beauty of the EV6 was hidden in plain sight.
For an extra touch of flair, the GT version includes radioactive-green brake discs and larger wheels.
The interior of the EV6 is also stylish with a two-spoke steering column, floating center console and brighter-green accents.
Con: There is no front trunk
[TAG2][TAG10]
Rivals such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y offer spacious front trunks that make use of the space normally occupied by an engines.
The EV6 GT has a small storage compartment under the hood. However, it doesn't seem very useful. It is unfortunate because the EV6 GT can seat four people comfortably due to its stretched wheelbase and flat floor. Other vehicles offer more room for non-human items.
Pro: Supercar-like quickness
[TAG3][TAG11]
The GT is a mix of a regular EV6 and Red Bull.
The two motors produce 576 horsepower and 545 pounds-feet respectively, which is more than twice the base model. All that power comes instantly because it is an EV. There is no lag, delay or waiting for the engine to rev up. Just mind-melting acceleration with every push of the right pedal.
The GT is agile and planted around corners.
Con: Steady ride
[TAG4][TAG12]
The EV6 GT is not for casual shoppers, but thrill-seekers. Its stiffened suspension improves handling but also allows for the translation of road imperfections directly into your rearend.
Con: Very limited range
[TAG5][TAG13]
You'll find yourself tempted to stomp on the accelerator when traffic opens up in the EV6 GT. Be careful not to drain its energy too fast.
The GT received more powerful motors from Kia without enlarging the battery pack. This means that its EPA-estimated driving distance is 206 miles. This is a lot less than direct competitors such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT (270 mi) and Tesla Model Y Performance (323 mi).
Pro: Lightning-fast charging
[TAG6][TAG14]
The EV6 is able to charge your electric car in a matter of minutes. EV6 is able to take advantage of some of the most powerful EV charging stations better than many other competitors, without getting into the technical details about wattage, amperage and 800-volt architectures.
Kia claims it can charge between 10% and 80% in just 18 minutes.
Pro: Loaded with safety and tech features
[TAG7][TAG15]
The EV6 GT is loaded with amazing features that make it easy and safe to drive. The EV6 GT offers a wide range of standard driver assistance tech, including blind-spot monitoring or lane keeping. Additionally, the EV6 GT has a 360-degree parking camera as well as blind-spot camera views. These view are displayed on the driver-facing screen when you make a lane change.
It provides some household power outlets as well, which is something you won't find in any EV. They were used to make my breakfast last year.
