- Tucker Carlson, who announced his plans Tuesday to bring his prime-time show to Twitter.
- Musk tweeted that the switch from Fox News to social media by the ousted host is not due to a new contract.
- Musk's tweets are likely to make him feel more free.
Tucker Carlson has picked up his megaphone once again. But it is unclear how much more he will poke the bear under Elon Musk on Twitter.
Carlson, who was recently fired from his Fox News primetime spot, announced Tuesday that he will be launching a show on Twitter. He praised the platform for being "the last major one" that still allows free speech.
The Daily Beast obtained leaked texts from the days following the 2020 elections that suggest this move is a result of his feeling trapped during his tenure at Fox News.
Carlson sent Brett Baier a text message that read, "I'm stuck at Fox." "Gotta do everything I can to keep up our numbers and our viewers satisfied." Carlson also complained in a text message from a few months later, which was obtained by The Beast. "Wish I had known where to run." But I'll die here."
Musk's twitter may not be what he was hoping for.
Kara Swisher, a tech business journalist, said: "Elon's not like Rupert" – referring to Carlson’s former boss and Fox Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch. "He is the show, which means he will send you out the door if he crosses you." Rupert's level of difficulty is high; Elon, well, Elon.
Musk, who has stated that Carlson is not bound by any contract and is just like any other content creator on Twitter, has shown a great deal of erratic behavior in terms of what he will post. He has said freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom of access.
Musk, Twitter's CEO has consolidated his reputation as a strict leader. He encourages remaining Twitter staff to adhere to "extremely tough" workweeks or face termination. Musk also ruthlessly fires employees who disagree with him or get in his way.
Musk has a tendency to change his mind about top talent. In November, he abruptly fired Twitter's head sales after she begged him to keep her. Musk locked out an engineer who publicly disagreed with Twitter's CEO after a short online spat.
Musk has made the user experience more restrictive. Musk, in the days after his takeover of the platform, tweeted that comedy was now legal. However, he immediately began to ban users who impersonated him using their verified accounts and made jokes about his $44 Billion acquisition. Freedom of speech has also been limited when it comes to publicly available flight information — real-time tracking of flights is also prohibited.
Musk, who has been criticized by users for his apparent preference of the Twitter Blue model subscription over content moderation and stripping verified legacy accounts of their blue checks, appears to have prioritized this model in favor despite the rise in hate speech on Twitter. He stripped legacy verified accounts from their blue check status, and only offered it to paid subscribers or dead celebrities.
Los Angeles Times reports that Rupert Murdoch reportedly decided to remove Carlson from his position. Fox News hasn’t publicly stated why it parted ways Carlson, but the decision was made following a sex-discrimination lawsuit and bombshell texts revealed in Fox News’ $787.5 million settlement against Dominion Voting Systems.
According to text messages revealed in Dominion's proceedings, the top brass of the news network complained about the liability that hosts like Carlson have become. They urged them to "stop believing the Trump myth" once the 2020 election had been called. Carlson and his former colleagues Laura Ingraham, Sean Hannity, griped about the network's hatred of them in texts. They also plotted how they could use their power within the network.
Musk said that Carlson will be considered as a content creator, and that he did not have any involvement in Carlson’s production agreement. Semafor believes that Carlson is likely to try to retain his audience and influence in politics with this switch.
Insider received no immediate response from Carlson or Fox News. Twitter's response to Insiders comment request was a poop-emoji. This is the standard response since March when the company laid off its communications staff.
