Over 30 accounts were blocked by Twitter from the college student who followed Elon Musk’s plane on Twitter.
Twitter banned Wednesday an account that had previously been tracking Elon Musk’s private plane. But it also prohibited anyone sharing links to similar accounts on any other social media site.
Jack Sweeney (college student) suspended the @ElonJet Twitter Account. Musk had said in November that he wouldn’t ban the account because of his “commitment for free speech”. Sweeney said that he was happy for Musk to allow his account to continue.
Sweeney, a Musk fan, stated in November that he had “sort of figured” that he was referring to his position because people would accuse him of saying one thing, then banning my account.
On Wednesday, Sweeney suspended the account along with more than 30 others Sweney had used to track private jets of famous people. Twitter soon announced an update of its “Private Information Policy” which would “interdict sharing another’s live location in most instances.”
There is a greater risk of physical injury when someone shares a person’s Twitter live location. We will remove any tweets sharing this information and account that share the live location of another person’s will be removed,” the company stated in a tweet.
The platform also blocked the Twitter account that had tracked Musk’s plane. It also prohibited Sweeney from sharing links to his @elonmusksjet Instagram page and his “Elon Musk’s Jet” Facebook page. Twitter returned an error message when trying to tweet a link from the Instagram account on Wednesday evening. It said: “We cannot complete this request because the link was identified by Twitter and our partners as potentially harmful.
Twitter has removed sharing links from Instagram and Facebook pages which track his private jet.
Twitter updated its policy to state that links to sites that track real time location will be blocked. It also said that information shared directly on Twitter or links to third-party URLs of travel routes, actual physical locations, or any other identifying information that could reveal a person’s location (regardless of whether this information is public or not)
Sweeney said to Insider’s Grace Kay that his personal Twitter account was shut down hours after his jet tracking accounts were published.
Sweeney stated that he didn’t really think he would suspend my personal account. “All the media attention that he received made me doubt his ability to do anything,” Sweeney said.
Sweeney previously stated that his account was “shadow-banned” and also indicated that he would continue to track Musk’s jet on other platforms.
He said, “I mean…fuck that guy!” This is absurd. My personal account doesn’t track any planes. “I’m going full-blast.”
