Twitter experienced its first major outage since Elon Musk’s takeover.
Around 10,000 people submitted problem reports to Downdetector, starting at 5 p.m. PST. Numerous issues were reported from North America, Europe and Asia.
Musk replied to unaffected users who were discussing the reports by saying, “Works for us.”
Twitter’s web browser platform was the most affected. Some users were automatically logged out, and then greeted by an error message saying “Something went wrong. But don’t worry, it’s not your fault.” Let’s do it again.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Twitter Spaces was not available on the mobile app.
Musk replied to users. It wasn’t clear whether Musk was tweeting from his smartphone or from the website. Musk has since removed the feature that indicated which device a tweet was sent.
After three hours, the outage was resolved when Downdetector reports returned back to baseline levels.
After Musk fired around half the 7,500 employees of Twitter, fears about an outage arose. This was shortly after he bought the company. Insider’s Kali Hays reported that Twitter had approximately 2,300 employees in November, a decrease of nearly 70%.
An ex-Twitter engineer who was fired before Musk took over said to Insider that if an issue did occur, it would take longer for recovery because core service maintenance personnel have been dismissed.
Twitter’s most recent major outage occurred in July. According to the Wall Street Journal there were five times more Downdetector reports than usual, but the problem was resolved in less than an hour.
Musk admitted that he made mistakes on Twitter during his appearance on Saturday’s “All-In” podcast. The podcast was posted on Saturday. Jason Calacanis, David Sacks and David Sacks are the show’s cohosts. They were there to advise Musk when he took control of the platform.
Musk stated, “Hey, man, I just got here,” “I believe we’ll have fewer gaffes over the future,” Musk said.
Insider asked Twitter for comment but was not answered.
