The Intercept obtained video of a Tesla causing an eight-car pileup in November 2022. Ken Klippenstein, Intercept reporter on Twitter
Surveillance video shows the Tesla driver stopping in a San Francisco tunnel. The resulting eight-car pileup was captured by the Intercept.

According to a report by The Intercept, surveillance footage taken from San Francisco Bay Bridge shows a Tesla coming up to a halt in a tunnel under the highway. Then, there was an eight-car pileup, as per a recent Intercept report.

According to the publication, the accident on November 24 halted traffic for more than an hour and left nine people injured, including a 2-year old. Through a public records request, the Intercept received two surveillance videos of the incident.

The Tesla driver claimed that the vehicle was under the influence Tesla’s Full Self-Driving software. He had moved into the left lane, and then stopped in front of another vehicle. This is according to the publication, which cites a traffic accident report from the incident. Spokespeople from NHTSA, California Department of Transportation didn’t confirm that the FSD feature had been activated.

Shayna Kelly, a San Francisco witness, said that she witnessed the Tesla suddenly swerving on the day of the pileup.

She said, “He made a sudden stop.” “At that point, there was nowhere else to go.”

FSD is an optional add-on to Tesla’s Autopilot driver assist feature. It allows the vehicle to change lanes, enter or exit highways, recognize stop signs, traffic lights and park. Beta testing is ongoing and a licensed driver must monitor the system at all time.

Insider was told by a spokesperson for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that the agency had opened an investigation into the accident. CNBC reported that the agency had launched at least 41 investigations into Tesla crash where automated features, such as Autopilot or Autopilot, were involved.

The Associated Press reported Monday that the NHTSA is looking into a tweet by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, in which he stated that he would update FSD software to remove a steering wheel monitoring function for some drivers.

In the past, Tesla’s FSD software was criticized. Beta testers have posted numerous bugs in Tesla’s FSD software on YouTube over the years. These include phantom brakes and attempts to turn in the wrong lane, as well as instances when the software failed to recognize pedestrians.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles charged Tesla last year with deceptive marketing practices in advertising Autopilot and FSD. A man was taken into custody in 2021 after being caught riding in his Tesla’s back seat while fully self-driving.
