- Other social media sites have seen an increase in users since Elon Musk acquired Twitter.
- To accommodate users looking for alternatives, platforms like Cohost or Hive Social have grown.
- Ex-Twitter staff members Spill and T2 are starting new startups that could be the next big thing.
In protest of Elon Musk's November $44 billion purchase of Twitter, celebrities and casual users alike pledged to leave the platform. They were upset by the company's content moderation policies. Also, they threatened massive layoffs throughout the company. This included the teams responsible for safety and trust.
This exodus of daily users, with hundreds of thousands of following, led to something: existing and new startup social media platforms. Some of these apps were not prepared for the new activity, so "Twitter refugees" began searching for a new platform.
Here are some other social media platforms that could become the next great legacy app.
Launched May 2015
Number Of Users: 150 Million Monthly Active Users, Discord's internal Statistics indicate.
According to the company's LinkedIn Page, There are 2,834 employees .
Funding – $995.4M was raised in 16 rounds, with an expected IPO later in the year per MLQ (an AI-based investment platform).
What others are saying:Discord started out as a way for gamers to communicate, but it has grown to include many servers. These servers are basically chat rooms that are based on user interest. The most popular ones being the meme channels and Grand Theft Auto players.
Instead of creating a "public square" feel where users can find a variety of topics, like Twitter, the chat-based platform segments users into servers according to their interests. Users can then speak directly with each other or use text-based features.
Jason Citron, CEO and cofounder of Discord, told The New York Times 2021 that Discord has experienced rapid growth over the years despite having only a few users at its beginnings.
Euronews stated that Discord's main attraction is the ability to allow users to communicate in real time using text, audio, and video. TechCrunch rated Discord as one of the top social media apps, but the platform's emphasis on live conversations isn’t for everyone.
Insider requested comment from representatives of Discord.
Launched: February 2016
Number Of Users:There are approximately 1.3 million active users monthly, according to Mastodon internal statistics. This is a significant increase from the 300,000 users between October and November after Musk's takeover.
The number of employees: 8. Per the company's LinkedIn
Funding:Raised $57,000 by 2021, The Washington Post reported. According to PC Mag, the CEO of the site turned down multiple six-figure investments from venture capital firms in order to keep its nonprofit status.
What people have to say:Founder Eugen Rochko, CEO and Chief Executive Officer, was dissatisfied by the direction and state of Twitter after years spent as a Twitter user for many years. He decided to launch Mastodon.
Open-source, decentralized social networking platform that allows users to post messages of up to 1500 characters. These messages are then visible to other users in a variety of chatrooms.
According to PC Mag, however, "getting started Mastodon can be difficult because it's not always easy to know where to begin."
Although the platform's design is sometimes confusing, Mastodon was visited by more than 130,000 people each day from November to Musk's takeover. This led users to search for alternative sites and The Guardian reported that this activity has declined, suggesting that users aren’t staying.
Insider reached out to Mastodon representatives but they did not respond.
Vice reported that Mastodon's open source code has been used to create other social media sites since its inception. TechCrunch praised it as one of the most popular Twitter alternatives while Euronews referred to it as confusing.
Launched:October 2019,
556,000 users per day, Raluca "Kassandra", Pop told Insider.
The number of staff:Five — expanding Pop said.
Funding$290.104 Raised through WeFunder, a crowdsourcing investing app.
What people think:Hive Social aims to bring back the joy of posting online, Pop shared with Insider.
Self-taught programmer at the age of 24, who keeps handwritten notes about the business in a notebook near her bedside, has created a place where users can decorate their profiles and share video or text posts with their followers. She is trying to combine the best bits from multiple social media platforms into one.
Pop stated that the platform has a stricter approach to content moderation than Twitter, in order to keep it free from harassment or hate speech, which has increased on Twitter since Musk's acquisition.
Pop stated that Hive has received a lot of feedback. "We're just continuing that," Pop said to Insider. Pop stated that the Hive has taken a very strict stance against hateful speech and transphobia, homophobia, and white supremacy. The app is very clear about what we will allow and won't allow.
Hive Social saw a surge in users following Musk's acquisition of Twitter. This was mainly Gen Z and younger millennials. Although the platform was established for many years and was able keep its feet on the ground, Hive Social briefly struggled to cope with the surge of activity and skyrocketing server costs.
Pop said that the growing pains have been worth them — and her goals are higher. "We want to grow and be one of those next four big apps," she stated.
The Verge called Hive "a cleaner, more efficient version of Twitter" with an app that has a familiar interface. Mashable called Hive the "latest competitor" to Twitter.
Launched: May 20,21
Number of active users:3.5 Million, according to Business of Apps, a news site in the sector.
Number: 213, according to the company's LinkedIn
Funding According to Business of Apps, the pre-revenue app raised $110,000,000 in two funding rounds.
What people have to say: The audio-focused app functions as live, public podcasting. Listeners and speakers join together in topic-based rooms, broadcasting together or just chatting.
Insider reached out to Clubhouse representatives but they did not respond.
Euronews reports that the pandemic-era app has moved largely to business-related chats. Bloomberg reported that Paul Davison, CEO of the company, stated that the company is moving to more intimate chatrooms than the broadcast-forward model.
PC Mag stated that Clubhouse is "on the way out" as Clubhouse saw a 60% drop in downloads during the past six months.
Launched: February 20, 2222
Total users:130,000 Jae Kaplan, co-founder of Cohost, told Insider that there are approximately 20,000 active users.
There are four full-time staff members, plus contracted support staff. Kaplan stated.
Funding At the end of 2022 the app had less than $59,000 in its bank, according to a Cohost financial report, which is posted quarterly to the site to ensure transparency. Kaplan stated that this was because the app has under $59,000. Optional subscription fees are the only source of revenue for the platform.
What people think:Cohost believes that social media is a new way of thinking, according to The Verge. Kaplan also agrees.
Kaplan stated to Insider that he prefers the term 'Twitter alternative,' as we are trying to do something new. "And not just something that's 'Twitter with no bad parts.'
Cohost posts can be customized using HTML or CSS coding. This means that screenshots of the site shared by users may have completely different layouts depending upon who made them. The platform has been used by creative users to improve their coding skills and create simple games.
Kaplan stated to Insider that we have the benefit from over 20 years worth of social media existence. "And I personally think that taking all that time, all the lessons we've learned and all that knowledge and then basically just building a straight copy of something else is lazy."
TechCrunch called Cohost "fairly new" and "a bit rocky," but it "could appeal to people who are looking for a simple alternative that actually looks a lot like Twitter in some aspects."
Launched: February 20, 2222
Users:2.85 Million monthly visitors as of October 20,22 according to TheRighting, a right-wing media watchdog. Truth Social traffic also dropped significantly in the past two months, the outlet reported.
Total staff:40 full time employees, Variety reported
FundingA SEC filing showed that the site was owned by Trump Media & Technology Group and had $27,203 of assets as of March 2022. The filing stated that "TMTG may not ever generate any operating revenue or achieve profitable operations."
What people say: The popularity of the Trump-owned social media website soared after the former President launched it, marketing his app to be a safe haven from censorship.
Newsweek reported that Truth Social briefly beat Twitter in app downloads at launch, but the "free speech” social media platform has suffered dwindling audience, financial losses and trademark denials in the past year.
Pew Research Center found that nearly half of the top 200 accounts on Truth Social, which is a nonpartisan platform was subject to an analysis. This means that almost all of them "have a reference of being right-leaning/pro-Trump in the profile, higher than any other social media platform."
Pew found that guns, the Capitol Riot, and vaccines are the most popular topics on this site.
Insider reached out to representatives of Truth Social for no comment
Vice reported that Mastodon's open source code was used in creating Truth Social's codebase. This included copying the error notices from the previous platform.
Launch expected: Q1 20,23
No staff: Founded by Alphonzo "Phonz” Terrell and DeVaris brown — both ex-Twitter employees.
Funding : Spill announced last month that the app had raised $2.75million in pre-seed funding.
What people think: Spill was created as an alternative to bird apps by two Tweeps. It caters to "culture drivers".
Although everyone is welcome to share their tea at the official launch, Phonz, the co-founder and CEO, envisioned the app with "Black creators," Queer creators and other influential voices from outside the US.
Phonz stated to Insider that the goal of Insider was to highlight the best Twitter content, which is really about culture. "And so that really set up the scene for the moment that is happening now."
Spill will help creators monetize viral posts and encourage influencers to incentivize innovation on the platform, Phonz stated — just like Black Twitter has done. The unofficial network is responsible for popular cultural movements such as #BlackLivesMatter and #SayHerName.
Terrell tweeted after the app's launch that Spill had received 22,000 reservations for handles in 12 hours.
Launch expected 2023. TBD
There are 9 full-time staff and 9 contracted staff. Gabor Cselle is the co-founder and CEO. He was previously a Group Product Manager at Twitter. Sarah Oh, co-founder, was previously a Human Rights Advisor at Twitter.
Funding:T2 raised $1.1 Million from angel investors, Cselle informed Insider.
What people say: Cselle was a former product manager at Twitter. She had been thinking about a bird app alternative for some time when she saw a huge swathe of layoffs at Twitter on November 4.
Cselle said that she was adamant, "maybe now is the time," and Insider reached out to Oh to partner on their new project. "And the idea T2 was to build first with a small community with a familiar format that has limitations — I believe constraints fuel creativity. It's very short, much like what Tick Tock video stuff is seeing.
The beta-testing T2 app will be different from Twitter when it launches officially. This is because the app's foundation has a strong focus on safety and community safety, which the cofounders explained to Insider. Instead of relying upon reactionary policies.
" Safety is usually achieved after something terrible happens," Oh said to Insider. "Normally, you're trying to get the best safety-first thing. Gabor called me and said that he had been imagining something similar to what we enjoy on Twitter, with safety and trust built in. It was easy to make the right decision."
Cselle explained to Insider that the T2 website name would be changed so as not evoke Terminator associations. Although the waitlist for T2 is over five digits in length, Cselle told Insider that it was not clear how many users still need approval to post.
