- Elon Musk has said that he views remote work as being "morally wrong", and the "laptop class are living in La la Land."
- In an interview with CNBC, the billionaire said that remote workers should "get off their goddamned moral high horses".
- Musk told Tesla employees last year they could either work full-time in the office or quit.
Elon Musk was not kind to remote workers. He asked why they should be allowed to work from home when those who prepare and deliver their food cannot.
Musk told CNBC's David Faber that it was "wrong" to assume they had to go to the office when you didn't. It's not only a productivity issue. "I think it's wrong morally."
The billionaire said that the laptop classes were living in "la la land" and compared remote working to "let them have cake."
Musk said, "Are you really going to work at home, and make everyone who built your car work in the factory?" Musk said. Musk said. You know that the people who fix your house can't work at home but you can. Does this seem morally correct? "That's wrong."
Musk stated that remote workers should "get off their goddamn moral superiority with the work-from-home bullshit, because they are asking everyone else not to work from home at the same time."
Tesla's CEO said that there are exceptions when it comes to office work. He doesn't expect workers to do the same work as he does, but to "put in 40 hours" in the office – even if that is accomplished in less than five office days.
Tesla implemented a remote-work policy for its office staff, but required factory workers to report for their shifts.
Musk sent Tesla employees back to work last summer and gave them an ultimatum. They could either return to the office at least 40 hours per week, or they could quit. A few weeks later the electric car company started tracking badged employees. Musk called Twitter employees into the office soon after he took over the company.
