Consumer Reports has given a lot of praise to hybrids and electric vehicles after years of being marketed as smarter options for car buyers looking for lower fuel costs and better fuel efficiency.
Seven models are fully or hybrid-electric in the 2023 Consumer Reports 10 Best Picks for Cars, Trucks and SUVs.
“This just shows how the market changes,” stated Jake Fisher, Senior Director of Automotive Testing at Consumer Reports. “Electrification is changing the market, not just for battery electric vehicles but also electrification. There are many great options.
Consumer Reports chooses the best models at different price points. This is based on testing new vehicles. The emphasis is on safety and affordability. The 2023 selection of hybrids/EVs highlights two benefits that these types of vehicles often have over models powered by internal combustion engines: reliability and fuel efficiency.
Fisher explained to CNBC that hybrids are “really easy on the engine and brakes because you actually use the generator/battery to soften everything.” “There are fewer brake problems, fewer transmission problems, and everything is more muted.” The hybrids are also produced by very reliable automakers that have used this technology for a while.

This explains why Toyota produces four of the 10 models selected for 2023 Top Picks. These include the Toyota Corolla Hybrid Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid, and Lexus NX 350h.
These models are part a wave hybrids that has helped Toyota to be the market leader in this segment. One out of four Toyota vehicles sold in the U.S. last year was a hybrid. Edmunds, an auto research firm, found that hybrids and electric vehicles accounted for less than 10% of all vehicles sold in the United States last year.
Hybrids and EVs are now more attractive than ever before because of their styling and performance.
You can have it all today. Fisher stated that you can have something spacious, comfortable, and fuel-efficient. Fisher cited the Ford Maverick Hybrid, which can get 37 MPG, as an example hybrid that has changed perceptions. “You don’t have to make compromises as you did in the past.”
After being removed from the list last year, Tesla is now back on the Top Picks List. It sells two of every three EVs in America. Consumer Reports voted the Lexus NX 350h and the Tesla Model 3 as the top choices for vehicles between $45,000 to $55,000.
Consumer Reports has ranked BMW No. Subaru followed closely by Mini and Mini as the No. 1 auto brand.
Fisher stated that BMW builds many reliable, high-performing models. Consumer Reports released a statement outlining their selections.
