- Elon Musk offers free blue checkmarks for those who complain about Twitter Blue.
- He gave them to users who have been vocal in blocking other users who pay for verification.
- Lil Nas X, Bette Midler and Bette Nas X are just a few of the celebrities that claim they did not pay for Twitter blue.
Elon Musk trots Twitter users who complain that they are given blue checkmarks free of charge or who support a campaign blocking those who pay for them.
Paul Krugman (an economist and New York Times contributor) tweeted on Sunday that he was "not responsible" for the blue checkmark that appeared. He also insisted that he didn't pay for it. Musk responded to the tweet by sharing a picture of a baby crying with a Twitter Blue Check mark.

The billionaire seemed to be making light of the situation when he replied "A troll me??" When the account T(w]itter Daily News posted screenshots of users that had backed #BlockTheBlue and received blue checkmarks free.
This comes after a few Twitter users began a campaign to encourage other Twitter users to block accounts who pay for Twitter Blue. They did this by tweeting the hashtag #BlockTheBlue. Twitter started to give some of these users free checkmarks.
Matt Binder, a Mashable reporter, was one of the users who received a free checkmark for writing about the #BlockTheBlue movement. Binder told Insider Musk began giving them away when the #BlockTheBlue campaign "gained steam".
Musk said that he only verified people who were willing to pay Musk to be honored, and did not want to block any accounts.
The reporter claimed that receiving the "checkmarks" was "proof that the campaign is "getting to Musk."
Binder stated that "the vast majority of Twitter Blue subscribers block them because they find their responses or mentions annoying, and this will likely continue to happen." "However I will say that I think this is probably the first funny thing Elon has ever done."
Lil Nas X, Bette Midler and others have tweeted that they didn't pay for Twitter Blue. "On my soul, i didn't buy twitter blue. You will feel my anger Tesla man!" Lil Nas X posted.
Bette Midler replied: "Yes, Elon returned my blue check. But I did not pay for it. Is that a sign of a good or bad person? I'm so confused. Only 400 people have signed up to receive their checks back. Guess #Twitter is also going through an "unscheduled deassembly".
Twitter's automated email response to Insider's request for a comment was not able to address the question.
