- Elon Musk spoke of wizards, flip phones and horses during Tesla's investor Day.
- The CEO of an EV manufacturer spoke out about AI's potential and scaling issues as well as the power of the human brain.
- Musk stated that there is an almost infinite demand for Tesla cars but that Tesla's affordability limits sales.
Elon Musk spoke about everything, from horses and wizards to flip phones to rust balls at Tesla's investor day Wednesday.
The CEO of an electric-vehicle business also made a joke about charging and talked about the dangers and limits of artificial intelligence, how the human brain works, and the difficulties of scaling up car production.
These are Musk's top 10 colorful quotes. They have been lightly edited for clarity and length.
1. "There is a wide range of technical expertise available, from level 9 wizards to those who don't do engineering."
2. All cars will be fully electric and self-driving. A non-autonomous gasoline vehicle will be similar to riding on a horse and using your flip phone.
3. Trivia point — What is Earth made from? It is composed of iron, which is the most abundant element in its mass. The second is oxygen, and then everything else. Earth is basically a muddy rustball."
4. I don't believe many people will use bi-directional charging without a Powerwall. If you unplug your vehicle, the house turns dark and it is very inconvenient. A Powerwall that can handle the house load will ensure you don't drive anyone crazy unplugging their car and making the house go dark.
5. People have outgrown their traditional cars and so they just reshuffle the deck. There are many variants of cars, but most of them are just variations for the sake. Take a look at the convergence of things with the phone. There used to be hundreds upon hundreds of flip phones. What do we now have? It will be just like that." Musk was talking about how many Tesla models he planned to launch.
6. "Demand for vehicles in terms of desire and ability to purchase them may be infinite. It's impossible to tell the difference between infinite and indistinguishable at this point. It is the affordability that matters. We will see a spike in demand if the car is more affordable.
7. The hard part of building cars and the supply chain that supports them is the most difficult. This is an extraordinary logistic challenge. Everything that goes into the car must scale with it while everything is on an exponential ramp. You can have a seizure if you miss any of these things.
8. "AI is not going to help us build cars any time soon," said the author. There is no point in any of us working on that point. All of us should just relax."
9. "I am a little concerned about the AI stuff; that's something we should be worried about. We need some kind of regulatory authority to oversee AI development and ensure that it is operating in the public interest. It's a very dangerous technology. I worry that I might have done something to speed it up. (Musk is the cofounder of OpenAI, which created ChatGPT.
10. "If you really look at the neural-net architecture of our car's vehicle, it's quite insane — nets upon netts upon nets." It's difficult to imagine. It's hard to imagine that something like this is happening while we drive, which is quite wild.
