Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed a bill that could have a significant impact on automakers, with the notable exception of Elon Musk's Tesla.
The measure prohibits auto manufacturers from selling directly through franchised dealerships to consumers within the state.
There is a special exemption in the law for Tesla, owned by billionaire Musk.
Musk, who owns Twitter as well, hosted DeSantis’ presidential campaign launch via Twitter Spaces in the last month.
DeSantis launched his campaign for 2024 on an audio forum after a glitchy launch. He answered questions about issues such as his feud with Disney and his crusade to combat so-called 'woke' ideology.
Florida Governor praised Musk for his "free speech advocacy" and thanked him for spending billions of dollars to buy Twitter.
DeSantis’ administration also struck an agreement with Musk’s SpaceX last summer to install Starlink satellite service in areas of southwest Florida affected by Hurricane Ian.
Musk has also publicly backed DeSantis in his 2024 campaign. Musk wrote that the current GOP frontrunner, Donald Trump, is "too old" to run for president and that DeSantis could "easily beat" President Joe Biden.
