  • Twitter added the "US state-affiliated Media" label to NPR’s account Tuesday.
  • This description is reserved for outlets such as Russia Today or Xinhua, both in China.
  • Twitter's Help Center has removed NPR from a page that previously mentioned it as one of the outlets "not classified as state-affiliated media."

Twitter added a label "US state-affiliated Media" to NPR's Twitter account. This is a distinction normally reserved for accounts such as Russia Today, which is funded by the Russian government, or China's Xinhua News Agency (the official state news agency) of the Chinese government.

Twitter's Help Center explains that the label refers to media outlets whose editorial content has been controlled by the state through financial resources, direct and indirect political pressures and/or control over production or distribution.

NPR was mentioned previously alongside the BBC in the UK, as an example state-financed media organization that has editorial independence. Therefore, it would not be considered "state-affiliated media" for the purposes this policy.

Twitter has since removed the mention of NPR from that Help Center page. It is still possible to mention the BBC, although it did not have the label added.

"We were disturbed last night to see that Twitter had labeled NPR as ‘state-affiliated media.' A description that, according to Twitter's guidelines, does not apply for NPR," John Lansing, NPR CEO and President, said in a statement shared to Insider.

Lansing said that NPR and its Member stations are supported daily by millions of listeners, who depend on our independent, fact-based journalism. "NPR stands up for freedom of speech, and holds the powerful accountable. Twitter cannot label us in this manner. Our democracy's health is dependent on a vibrant, free press.

NPR's website states that less than 1% of the annual operating budget comes from grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and federal agencies and department. NPR claims that sponsorships from corporations and fees paid by NPR Member organizations are its main revenue sources. CPB was established by the 1967 Public Broadcasting Act of Congress.

In text messages, Elon Musk previously stated that he finds Russia Today's news "very entertaining". This was in response to a former Tesla executive. These texts were discovered in court documents as Musk was trying to rescind his decision to purchase Twitter for $44 Billion.

"EU passed a law banning Russia Today, several other Russian news outlets. After the European Union issued an order in March banning Russian state media outlets following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Musk sent Antonio Gracias a text message. Musk replied in another text that Russia's media had "lots of bullshit but also some good points."
