  • Platformer reported that Monday's outage was caused by a mistake made by one Twitter engineer.
  • Twitter users received an error message on Monday when they attempted to view photos and links.
  • Since acquiring Twitter, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter has reduced Twitter's workforce by thousands.

Platformer reported that Twitter's Monday outage was caused by a single engineer.

Platformer reported that a site reliability engineer assigned with closing down Twitter's API access made a "bad change in configuration" that "basically broke Twitter API," as a former employee said.

Twitter users were confronted Monday with an error message as they attempted to view photos or links. Twitter blamed the problem on an "internal error" that had "unintended consequences."

Insider reached out to Twitter representatives for comment but they didn't respond immediately.

In a tweet, Elon Musk, Twitter's owner, addressed Monday's outage. He posted the tweet after the social network was restored. Musk replied to Marc Andreessen by saying that a small API change had huge ramifications. The code stack is very fragile for no good reason. "Will eventually need to a complete overhaul."

Platformer was told by one employee that there is so much tech debt from Twitter 2.0 that anything can be fixed if it's not changed immediately.

Platformer reports that Twitter has lost 550 of its full-time employees due to a series of layoffs. Since October's acquisition of Twitter, Musk has reduced the number of employees by thousands.

Employees and experts have been warning for some time about the possibility of social media platforms being hampered by massive headcount reductions.

Insider's Kali Hays was previously informed by Twitter insiders that while a total failure of Twitter is unlikely, technical problems could cause the site to cease functioning reliably.
