After pictures of a redesigned Model 3 appeared online this week, rumors of Tesla's major first redesign have intensified.

Tesla analysts have suspected for years that a Model 3 redesign will be coming this year. Tesla fans began posting photos of the models in recent months. This week, speculation intensified when a Reddit user claimed to have taken a photo of the un-camouflaged front end for the Model 3. It's not clear if this photo is real.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors, has avoided and even criticised the industry-wide practice of redesigning vehicles for many years. Tesla instead focuses on providing drivers with continuous software updates to improve driving experiences.

Tesla takes on the mass market

Musk said Tesla plans to produce 2 million cars this year. This would be a nearly doubled production capacity for 2022. In order to get there, Tesla will likely have to engage more in demand-juicing behaviors – a brand new frontier for an organization that struggled once to build enough cars to meet demand.

Investors and analysts believe that as vehicles such as the Model 3 and Model Y – Tesla's most affordable vehicles – become more prevalent, redesigning these cars will be crucial to increasing deliveries in this year.

Tesla has set a new date for production of the Cybertruck and a promised $25,000 car. Tesla must make these moves and redesigns in order to compete with GM, Toyota, and other automakers.

Tesla has been plagued by signs of sagging demand since late last summer, which led the company to offer Supercharger incentives and slash its prices, similar to clearance sales on traditional dealer lot.
